Orthognathic Surgery (Jaw Surgery)
Some people have bites that don’t allow the upper and lower teeth to come together in a good functional position. This may create a visually noticeable under- or over-bite. This limits the effectiveness of food chewing, may result in early fatigue while chewing, and can prevent some affected people from being able to bite food with their front teeth, as well as a number of other potential problems. In addition to functional problems, this jaw growth problem can sometimes be cosmetically unpleasing. A correction of these problems is sometime beyond the scope of braces alone. When this is the case a corrective jaw surgery can be performed to move the upper, lower, or both jaws into the proper alignment. The result improves both chewing function of the jaws and facial appearance.
